FROM ANCIENT TO MODERN

Angus Harvey has been creating hand-crafted clothing for the highland man and woman for over 20 years

Formally trained in both sewing and kilt making, Angus is the resident kilt maker at the beautiful Bristol Renaissance Faire in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the first and only person to hold that distinction. You can also find him each summer in Michigan at The Michigan Renaissance Faire.

As a historian and writer in the area of Highland clothing history, Angus is always happy to share his knowledge. If you need information or want to place an order, please feel free to reach out to Angus at the email address below.

TARTAN

We deal directly with several mills in Scotland and can order any available tartan in any amount you require.

Tartan is available in a number of different weights from 8 oz to 21 oz. and has various uses. Ten ounce tartan is considered light weight and is used primarily for women’s dresses; it also will make a fine Great Kilt. We don’t recommend this weight for mens kilts.

Thirteen ounce is medium weight kilting tartan and the one most often used for mens kilts. If you don’t mind the heavier weight, it can be used for a Great Kilt. Sixteen ounce is heavy weight – it pleats well and is preferred by some. SW or DW stands for Single Width or Double Width – if you have other questions please call or e-mail us and we’ll be happy to answer your questions. Silk and cotton tartans are also available.

If you’re looking for less expensive wool blends or wools, please contact us for our current in-stock wool list. These are only available as Great Kilts or to be made into fair quality Victorian era kilts and are not sold as yardage.

As with kilts there is a wide range of prices depending on weight and name of tartan selected. Contact us and we’ll quote you an exact price. Normal delivery time is approximately eight to ten weeks to your door. This is somewhat variable depending on the time of year and factors related to the particular mill involved. We can provide a pretty solid estimate at the time of your purchase.

If you require a tartan that has to be custom milled, we require a 10-15 yard minimum. All quoted prices are direct to your door.

KILTS, A HISTORY OF HIGHLAND CLOTHING

This carefully researched book written by Angus provides a complete history of Highland clothing and its inter-relationship to important historical events. Explained in detail is the evolution of the kilt into the modern, hand-sewn work of art we know today, and how this evolution was linked to social change.

This approximately 100 page, black and white effort, which contains a number of illustrations and maps, makes for easy reading and is a must for anyone interested in Highland clothing and Scottish history in general. For people who like to attend renaissance fairs or similar activities costume assistance is also provided.
